How to deal with problem solving processes? When is being on the same page not useful?
How many times do we think that in order to create a good team we all need to be on the same page? But here I dare to say that’s not necessarily the case – while tackling a problem, it’s best to divide it into 4 stages and involve 4 different styles of approach:
- Initiator – great at generating various ideas how to deal with the problem
- Strategists – great at noticing the best ideas and ways among the pile of chaotic ideas delivered by an Initiator
- Tactician – great at pointing out pluses and minuses of Strategist’s plan and preparing an action plan
- Operator – great at implementing the solution and making it a reality
Now, hopefully you can see that we may often misjudge someone’s competence – for example, we involve Operators in the first stage and we end up highly dissatisfied with their results deeming them dispensable.
But if only we assign the right people to the right stages we can immensely improve the whole process and obtain satisfying results.
Now, how to spot the four types and say which is which?
Look out for the following characteristics:

- INITIATOR (often a calm person)
-Meticulous
-Studious
-Patient
-Adores amassing data

2. STRATEGIST
-Quick-witted (connects the dots fast)
-Precise
-Like their own ways of doing things

3. TACTICIAN
-Diligent
-Unemotional
-Often points out weak points in plans

4. OPERATOR
-Impatient
-Doer
-Ready to take risks
